Bird Forestry Home

Our philosophy at BF concerning forest management is based on the goals of the landowner, combined with sound science and our many years of experience.  There are many possible management strategies that can be used to achieve the landowners’ goals, depending upon the conditions of the land itself and the planning horizon of the owner.

BF has experience in managing many different forest types ranging from coastal bottomlands to the southern Rocky Mountains, dealing with both conifers and broadleaf trees.  BF looks at a given tract of land from not just a pure forest product standpoint, but as a potential package of forest resources that also include wildlife, recreation, alternative forest products, and environmental - conservation potential.

BF does not take any one standard approach to forest management due to the many options available to the modern forester.  Among the many tools and methodologies used by BF to reach our client’s goals include:

Natural Forest Regeneration
Applied both pine and hardwood management, this method can offer an economic and very aesthetically-pleasing alternative to planting seedlings.

High-Yield Plantation Management
BF uses the latest methods of effective site preparation, improved seedlings and supervised seedling handling and planting to insure good initial establishment of pine and hardwood plantations.  There are also opportunities to apply forest fertilization and additional brush control to boost tree growth.

Uneven-aged Forest Management
This method can work well depending on the situation and the landowner’s long-term commitment, and has shown excellent financial returns as well as always having larger trees on the land.

Longleaf Pine
BF has experience in the establishment and management of longleaf forests in Texas and Mississippi.  This option offers good potential economic returns combined with an exceptionally beautiful forest.

Direct Seeding
BF uses this regeneration method to supplement natural regeneration, as well as a good tool for establishing bottomland hardwood forests.  We have over twenty-five years experience with direct seeding.

Undesirable Species Control
BF uses a combination of forest thinning harvests and properly-applied forestry herbicides to help foster the growth and regeneration of desirable forest species, for both forest products and wildlife habitat enhancement.
